A bug in Google Chrome is preventing the browser from functioning correctly on Android tablets, leaving users unable to access the web through Google’s default browser.
The issue affects the stable release of Chrome on Android tablet devices, according to a report by Android Police. Google confirmed it is working on a fix.
What the bug does
Affected users report the browser crashes on launch or renders pages incorrectly, making normal browsing impossible on tablet-sized screens.
The bug appears tied to a recent Chrome update pushed to the stable channel, which Google uses to distribute software to the general public.
Google’s response
Google acknowledged the problem but has not given a public timeline for the patch. The company said it is actively investigating.
In the interim, some users have switched to alternative browsers such as Firefox or Microsoft Edge to maintain access on their tablets.
Chrome holds the dominant share of the global mobile browser market. As of early 2025, it accounts for approximately 65 percent of mobile browser usage worldwide, according to StatCounter.
Android tablets have seen a modest resurgence in recent years. Google's own figures show the company has pushed developers to better optimise apps for large-screen Android devices since Android 12L, a version of Android built specifically for tablets and foldables.
A broken browser on those devices hits harder than it would on a phone. Tablets, by design, lean more heavily on web-based tasks — document editing, video calls, and content consumption — than their smaller counterparts.
Chrome on Android uses a rendering engine called Blink, the same engine that powers the desktop version of Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. A fault at that layer can affect how pages load, how JavaScript executes, and whether the browser opens at all.
Google has not confirmed which specific Chrome version introduced the fault. The stable channel typically receives updates every four weeks, though Google can push emergency patches outside that cycle when critical bugs surface.
