Google’s Phone Hub feature connects Android phones directly to Chromebooks through a single taskbar panel, giving users shared notifications, hotspot controls, and app access across both devices.
The feature has been built into ChromeOS since 2021, though many users with both a Chromebook and an Android phone remain unaware of it.
What Phone Hub Does
Phone Hub lives in the ChromeOS taskbar as a small phone icon. Clicking it opens a panel that displays the Android phone’s battery level, mobile signal strength, and Wi-Fi status at a glance.
From that same panel, users can enable the phone’s mobile hotspot without unlocking it. They can also silence the phone or locate it if it goes missing.
Recent Chrome browser tabs open on the Android phone appear inside the hub, letting users pull them up on the Chromebook without retyping a URL or sending links to themselves.
The feature also surfaces Android notifications directly on the Chromebook screen. Users can read and dismiss them from the Chromebook without touching their phone.
Setup
Phone Hub requires both devices to share the same Google account. The Chromebook must run ChromeOS with the feature enabled under Settings > Connected devices > Android phone.
Once linked, the phone and Chromebook communicate over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The initial pairing takes roughly two minutes.
Context
Google has long positioned ChromeOS and Android as complementary platforms rather than competing ones. Phone Hub is part of a broader cross-device initiative that also includes Nearby Share, which transfers files between Android and ChromeOS devices without a cable.
ChromeOS, developed by Google, runs on Chromebooks manufactured by partners including Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo. As of 2023, Google has not published total active Chromebook user figures, though IDC reported that Chromebook shipments reached approximately 22.8 million units in 2022 before declining in 2023 alongside a broader PC market contraction.
