Google’s Gemini AI assistant is now available inside Android Auto, giving drivers a more capable voice interface than the Google Assistant it largely replaces.
The shift matters because Gemini can handle more conversational, open-ended requests — not just set-navigation or play-music commands that older assistants handled.
Getting started
Drivers must first ensure their Android phone runs the latest version of Android Auto, available through the Google Play Store. Gemini also requires a Google account and, for some advanced features, an active Gemini Advanced subscription under Google One.
Once enabled, drivers activate Gemini the same way they triggered Google Assistant — by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the microphone icon on the Auto interface.
Messaging and calls
Gemini reads incoming messages aloud without requiring the driver to touch the screen. It also composes and sends replies by voice, pulling context from the conversation so responses sound natural rather than templated.
For calls, drivers say the contact name and Gemini dials directly. It handles follow-up instructions mid-call, such as switching to speakerphone, without requiring a second wake phrase.
Navigation
Drivers can ask Gemini for routing suggestions in plain language — “find a gas station with a car wash near my route” — rather than typing a specific address. It passes the destination to Google Maps or Waze, whichever the driver has set as default.
Gemini also responds to mid-route changes. Asking it to “add a coffee stop in about 20 miles” adjusts the route without the driver leaving the navigation screen.
Music and media
Voice control over streaming apps — Spotify, YouTube Music, and others that support Android Auto — works through Gemini. Drivers describe what they want to hear rather than naming a specific playlist, and Gemini interprets the request.
Saying “play something calm for highway driving” returns a contextual result rather than requiring the exact playlist name.
Hands-free productivity
Gemini handles reminder-setting and note-taking by voice, syncing to Google Keep or Google Tasks. A driver can say “remind me to call the client when I get home” and Gemini sets a location-based reminder without further input.
It also answers factual questions — traffic regulations, business hours, unit conversions — without redirecting to a browser, keeping the driver’s eyes off the screen.
Battery and data considerations
Gemini in Android Auto uses a persistent data connection to process requests in the cloud. Drivers on limited mobile data plans should monitor consumption, particularly on long trips where voice queries run frequently.
Screen-on time and active voice processing also accelerate phone battery drain. Running the phone on a car charger during Android Auto sessions is standard practice for most users.
Compatibility
Not all Android phones support every Gemini feature inside Auto. Google's Android Auto support page lists device and OS version requirements. As of mid-2025, Gemini inside Android Auto requires Android 9.0 or later on the connected handset.
