Vertu has launched the Alphafold, a $6,800 folding smartphone pitched at executive users, but the device ships with a processor that rivals consider a generation behind current flagship standards.

The hardware gap
The Alphafold’s processor choice draws immediate scrutiny at that price point. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, a direct competitor in the folding segment, runs on more current silicon.
Vertu has not publicly disclosed which chip powers the Alphafold, but reports from Android Police describe it as strangely outdated for a 2026 device.
The Vertu brand
Vertu began as a Nokia subsidiary in 1998, producing handcrafted phones with sapphire crystal screens and leather bodies aimed at wealthy buyers. Nokia sold the brand in 2012, and it changed hands several times before a Chinese investment group acquired it.
The company built its reputation on materials and craftsmanship rather than cutting-edge performance. That trade-off worked in an era when top-tier chips varied little in real-world use. It carries more risk now, when AI processing increasingly depends on dedicated on-device hardware.
The folding phone market has grown sharply. IDC estimated global foldable shipments reached roughly 21 million units in 2024, up from under 15 million the prior year. Samsung holds the dominant share of that segment.
At $6,800, the Alphafold sits well above Samsung’s Z Fold 7, which launches at approximately $1,899. The gap leaves Vertu relying almost entirely on brand cachet and materials to justify the difference.
The AI positioning also invites comparison to software available on far cheaper devices. Most enterprise AI tools run through cloud servers, meaning the local chip’s capability matters less for those applications — but on-device AI processing, which handles tasks privately without a network connection, depends heavily on processor generation.
Vertu has not released a full technical specification sheet or announced retail availability dates as of publication.
