Google’s Gemini AI assistant is displacing direct use of some of the company’s most-used apps, with users reporting they open YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Calendar, and Keep less often than before.
The shift reflects a broader pattern in how AI-layer tools are absorbing tasks that previously required opening a dedicated application.
How Gemini Replaces App Interactions
Gemini can surface Gmail content, schedule calendar entries, and retrieve location information without the user leaving the assistant interface. That frictionless access reduces the need to tap into each app individually.
Still, the underlying apps remain active. Users continue to rely on them for full-featured tasks — watching videos, composing long emails, or navigating in real time — but routine lookups and quick actions increasingly route through Gemini instead.
What This Means for App Engagement
Reduced direct opens do not necessarily mean reduced data flow to Google’s ecosystem. Each Gemini query that touches Gmail or Calendar still passes through Google’s servers and those apps’ APIs.
That distinction matters for how Google reports engagement. App-open metrics and active-user counts may not capture AI-mediated interactions, which could make traditional engagement figures a less reliable measure of actual usage.
Google’s Expanding Gemini Integration
Google has embedded Gemini across Android and its core app suite, positioning the assistant as a central access point rather than a standalone tool. The company accelerated that integration through 2024, adding Gemini to the side panel in Gmail, Docs, and Maps on Android.
At the same time, Google has moved to replace its legacy Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices, a transition the company began rolling out broadly in early 2024. That replacement gives Gemini a default position on hundreds of millions of devices.
The Apps Affected
Keep, Google’s note-taking app, is among the services seeing lighter direct use. Users can ask Gemini to retrieve or create notes without opening Keep itself.
Calendar integration works similarly. A spoken or typed query can return the day’s schedule, add an event, or flag a conflict — all within the Gemini interface.
Gmail access through Gemini allows users to check recent messages, get summaries of email threads, or find specific senders without loading the inbox. That capability draws on Gemini’s ability to read and process a user’s email content with permission.
Maps sees a different pattern. Real-time navigation still pulls users into the app directly, but queries like finding nearby businesses or checking hours often resolve inside Gemini.
YouTube remains the most intact of the affected apps. Gemini can answer questions about videos or channels, but actual playback routes the user to the YouTube app or site.

Google’s Gemini launched publicly in December 2023, rebranding what had been known as Bard. The company reported in October 2024 that Gemini had reached more than one billion installs across Android devices, according to Google's official blog.
