Apple is preparing a significant redesign of both its iOS operating system and Siri voice assistant for iOS 27, according to PhoneArena.
The update would mark Apple’s most visible attempt to close the gap between Siri and competing AI assistants from Google and Microsoft.
What iOS 27 Is Expected to Change
The redesign targets Siri’s core functionality — the assistant’s ability to understand context, execute multi-step tasks, and respond accurately to natural language queries. Siri has drawn sustained criticism from users and analysts for lagging behind rivals on those fronts.
Apple has not confirmed specific features publicly. That said, the company is expected to detail iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference, known as WWDC, its annual event where it traditionally unveils major software updates.
Siri’s Troubled Recent History
Apple introduced an AI-enhanced version of Siri with iOS 18, promising deeper integration with third-party apps and on-device intelligence. Delivery fell short of those promises. The company delayed several advertised features and scaled back others after launch.
Bloomberg reported in early 2025 that Apple internally acknowledged Siri’s AI capabilities required a fundamental rebuild, not incremental fixes. Engineers working on the project faced repeated internal deadlines they could not meet.
That reporting prompted public pressure on Apple leadership to provide clearer timelines. CEO Tim Cook addressed the issue on an earnings call, saying the company was “making progress” but offering no specific release dates.
The Competitive Stakes
Google has pushed Gemini, its AI model, into Android devices and the Google Assistant framework. Microsoft has embedded its Copilot AI across Windows and mobile platforms. Both companies moved faster than Apple on generative AI — the technology behind large language models that can produce conversational, context-aware responses.
Apple’s slower pace reflects, in part, its stated emphasis on on-device processing rather than cloud-based computation. On-device AI keeps user data local, which aligns with Apple’s privacy positioning. The tradeoff is that on-device models typically carry less raw capability than cloud-run counterparts.
Apple's fiscal year 2024 annual report showed the company generated $391 billion in net sales, giving it the financial resources to invest heavily in AI infrastructure. Still, money alone has not resolved the engineering challenges Siri faces.
What a Rebuilt Siri Could Mean for iPhone Users
A functional overhaul would affect hundreds of millions of active iPhone users. Apple told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission it had more than 2.2 billion active devices across its ecosystem as of early 2024.
Siri serves as the primary interface for hands-free control across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and HomePod. Weaknesses in Siri’s performance affect the usability of all those products.
Apple has historically used hardware-software integration as a competitive advantage. A more capable Siri could strengthen that integration — particularly as rivals position AI assistants as a reason to switch platforms.
