Verizon is fitting antennas directly beneath stadium seats at FIFA World Cup 2026 host venues, a network upgrade designed to absorb the mobile data demands of one of the largest sporting events ever staged on U.S. soil.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the U.S. carrying the bulk of matches. More than 10 million international visitors are expected to travel to the U.S. for the tournament, according to FIFA.
Why Under the Seat
Dense stadium crowds overwhelm conventional antenna setups mounted high on masts or rafters. Signal degrades when tens of thousands of devices compete for the same tower at the same moment.
Under-seat distributed antenna systems — known in the industry as DAS — position small antennas within meters of individual fans. That proximity cuts congestion and boosts throughput per user.
Verizon has deployed similar systems in NFL stadiums and NBA arenas, but the World Cup introduces a distinct variable: international SIM cards. Visitors arriving from abroad will connect through roaming agreements on Verizon’s network, adding traffic from users who are not existing Verizon subscribers.
Scale of the Build
Verizon has not disclosed the full cost or the total number of antennas being installed across all venues. The carrier is working with stadium operators and local authorities at each host city to complete the build before the tournament kicks off in June 2026.
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which will host the World Cup final, seats approximately 82,500 people, according to NFL official records. AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, are also among the designated host venues.
Each of those facilities already carries substantial DAS infrastructure from prior network investments. Even so, a global tournament draws a different crowd profile than a regular-season NFL game — more foreign devices, more simultaneous video uploads, and higher peak demand in shorter windows.
Network Demand at Major Events
Mobile data consumption at live sporting events has climbed sharply in recent years. During Super Bowl LVIII in February 2024 in Las Vegas, wireless carriers collectively handled record data volumes inside Allegiant Stadium, with Verizon reporting more than 30 terabytes of data used on its network during the game.
The World Cup final alone is expected to draw a global television audience exceeding one billion viewers, based on FIFA broadcast data from the 2022 Qatar tournament. In-stadium fans increasingly mirror that consumption — streaming, posting, and video-calling in real time.
Verizon’s in-seat antenna program directly targets that behavior. By placing hardware at the fan level rather than at the roof line, the carrier aims to keep individual connection speeds usable even at peak crowd moments.
The U.S. leg of the tournament runs from June through July 2026, with the final set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
