Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: Five Rumored Features Set for July Launch

Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide as early as July, according to circulating industry rumors, as the company moves to defend its position in the foldable smartphone market ahead of an expected foldable device from Apple.

The “Wide” designation signals a broader inner display than previous Fold models — a form factor shift that analysts say targets users who find current foldables too narrow for comfortable tablet-mode use.

What the Rumors Claim

Five features have emerged repeatedly across leaks and supply chain reports, though Samsung has not confirmed any details officially.

First, the device is rumored to carry a larger cover screen — the outer display used when the phone is folded shut — potentially matching the width of a standard candy-bar smartphone to reduce the compromises users accept when the device is closed.

Second, leakers point to a slimmer hinge design that cuts overall thickness, addressing one of the most consistent criticisms of the Fold line since its debut in 2019.

Third, the Fold 8 Wide reportedly adopts an under-display camera on the inner screen, removing the punch-hole cutout that has interrupted the inner display on prior generations.

Fourth, supply chain sources suggest Samsung will use a new polymer screen coating designed to improve scratch resistance — a persistent weak point for foldable displays compared with the hardened glass found on standard smartphones.

Fifth, the device is expected to run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the same chip powering Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series, which launched earlier in 2025.

The Apple Factor

Samsung’s timing carries strategic weight. Apple is widely expected to enter the foldable market, with multiple analyst reports placing a Foldable iPhone launch between late 2025 and 2026.

A July release would give Samsung several months of market presence before Apple arrives — assuming Apple holds to that timeline.

Samsung has shipped more foldable smartphones than any other manufacturer since the category launched. Still, the segment remains small relative to the broader smartphone market.

IDC data showed foldable smartphones accounted for roughly 1% of total global smartphone shipments in 2023, though the research firm projected the segment would grow as prices fell and durability improved.

Samsung’s Competitive Position

The Fold line has evolved significantly since its troubled first-generation launch, when screen failures prompted Samsung to delay the original Galaxy Fold’s retail release.

Each subsequent generation has tightened build quality and refined the software experience, yet price remains a barrier — the Galaxy Z Fold 6 launched at $1,899 in the United States.

Whether the Fold 8 Wide arrives with a higher, lower, or matching price point remains unclear from current leaks.

Samsung typically holds its Galaxy Unpacked launch events for foldables in late July or early August, a cadence the company has maintained since 2021.
