FIFA will use a battery-powered smart ball at the 2026 World Cup — one that referees and officials must charge before each match.
The ball, named the Trionda, contains an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor at its core. An IMU tracks motion, rotation, and acceleration in Real Time, feeding data to the match’s video assistant referee system.
How It Works
The sensor transmits positional data at 500 times per second, according to FIFA's official technical documentation. That rate allows VAR officials to pinpoint the precise moment a ball leaves a player’s foot — directly affecting offside calls.
Adidas manufactures the Trionda under its long-standing contract with FIFA. The ball’s outer casing uses a thermally bonded panel construction, a method that eliminates stitching and produces a more uniform surface.
A wireless charging cradle powers the internal battery. Ground staff must charge the ball to full capacity before it enters play, and match officials carry replacement balls at the same charge level throughout the game.
Why It Matters for Officiating
FIFA introduced connected ball technology at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the Al Rihla ball carried a similar sensor. The Trionda builds on that system with reported improvements to data latency — the delay between a real-world event and its detection by the sensor.
Semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), which FIFA debuted in Qatar, depends on the ball’s positional data alongside player-tracking cameras placed around the stadium. The combination allows the system to generate an offside decision within seconds, replacing the longer manual review process used in earlier tournaments.
The 2026 tournament spans the United States, Canada, and Mexico — the first World Cup held across three countries. FIFA expanded the field from 32 to 48 teams for that edition, which runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Staging matches across 16 cities and three time zones places additional logistical demands on officiating infrastructure. Consistent ball charging protocols will apply at every venue to ensure the sensor performs to specification throughout the competition.
Design and Aerodynamics
The Trionda’s panel geometry draws from Adidas’s research into ball flight stability. Fewer, larger panels — compared to the 32-panel design traditional to soccer — reduce seam interference and produce more predictable trajectories, particularly on long-range shots and set pieces.
FIFA mandated that the ball meet IFAB (International Football Association Board) regulations on size, weight, and pressure. The connected sensor adds minimal mass, keeping the ball within the 410–450 gram range required under Law 2 of the Laws of the Game.
The 2026 competition marks the third consecutive men’s World Cup to use a connected match ball, following Qatar 2022 and, to a lesser extent, testing conducted ahead of Russia 2018.
