Google has rolled out Desktop Mode to Pixel device users following several months of testing within the Android 16 development cycle.
The feature functions similarly to Samsung DeX — Samsung’s long-running desktop interface that lets users connect their phones to an external display and use Android like a traditional PC.
What Desktop Mode Does
Desktop Mode lets Pixel users connect their device to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and navigate a windowed Android environment, moving between apps much as they would on a laptop.
Samsung introduced DeX in 2017, giving Galaxy device owners a head start of nearly eight years on the desktop phone concept.
Still, Google’s entry into the space gives the broader Android ecosystem a native, manufacturer-agnostic version of the same idea.
How It Compares to Samsung DeX
DeX has matured significantly over the years, adding features like drag-and-drop file transfers, customizable taskbars, and full keyboard shortcut support.
Google’s Desktop Mode enters at a baseline level, as expected of a feature fresh out of extended beta testing on Android 16.
That said, building the functionality directly into stock Android means any future Pixel update — or potentially a wider Android rollout — could push the feature to a much larger pool of devices.
By contrast, DeX remains exclusive to Samsung hardware, limiting its reach to Galaxy Phone and tablet owners.
Why This Matters
Smartphone-as-PC concepts have gained real traction as mobile processors close the performance gap with entry-level laptops.
Counterpoint Research has tracked steady growth in the premium Android segment, where buyers increasingly expect desktop-grade multitasking from their handsets.
Google’s move signals that desktop convergence — the idea of a single device serving both mobile and PC roles — now sits firmly within the company’s mainstream product strategy rather than as an experimental side project.
Android 16 remains in active development, and Google has not yet confirmed a full public Release Date for the stable build carrying Desktop Mode.
