Accessory manufacturers appear to have received early specifications for Apple’s foldable iPhone Ultra, with leaked protective cases offering the clearest look yet at the device’s expected dimensions and design.
Case makers typically receive hardware specifications from Apple months before a product launch, allowing them to manufacture compatible accessories in time for release day.
The leaked cases suggest the foldable iPhone Ultra will follow a clamshell form factor — a design that folds the screen in half along a horizontal hinge, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series.
What the Cases Reveal
Precise cutout positions on the leaked cases indicate the location of camera modules, charging ports, and side buttons on the finished device.
Case leaks of this kind carry more weight than renders or supply chain rumors because manufacturers must work from dimensional data supplied directly by the company, rather than speculation.
Still, Apple has not confirmed the device exists. The company maintains its standard policy of silence on unannounced products.
Background
Apple has faced sustained pressure to enter the foldable smartphone market as rivals have expanded their lineups. Samsung shipped 10 million foldable phones globally in 2023, according to IDC, a market research firm tracked by industry analysts as a secondary indicator of segment growth.
Apple’s supply chain partners in Asia began ramping production of foldable display components in late 2024, according to reporting by Reuters.
The iPhone Ultra branding would place the foldable above the existing iPhone Pro Max in Apple’s product hierarchy. Apple introduced the Ultra tier with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022 and extended it to the Mac with the M-series Ultra chips.
Foldable devices present engineering challenges distinct from conventional smartphones, including hinge durability, display crease visibility, and battery capacity constraints imposed by the split chassis.
Samsung and Google, which sells the Pixel Fold line, have each released multiple foldable generations as they work through those limitations. Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, released in 2024, reduced the visible crease compared with its predecessor, the company said in product documentation filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
Apple entering the segment would mark the company’s first entirely new iPhone form factor since it launched the standard slab design with the original iPhone in 2007.
